INVOLVEMENT

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
Benjamin Franklin

Camp Manitou

At Chaminade College, Grade 9s traditionally attend Camp Manitou, a retreat meant to build a sense of brotherhood. Seniors are invited to volunteer as leaders, and I was a member of the core team. Made up of only 6 individuals, we put together all the necessary preparation and directed the camp during the retreat.

I took on a media-focused role with responsibilities including shirt design, video production, and lip-sync submissions monitoring. At the camp, I oversaw other leaders and had to quickly resolve issues to keep everything under control. Working with new people called upon various soft skills like communication together with teamwork, and as a collective, we were able to solve issues related to activities and cabin group conflicts.

Play Video

In 2019, the Chaminade Players put on a production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, and as a crew member, one of my tasks was creating a video for the math question explanation which Christopher Boone delivers at the end of the play.

In Grade 9-10, I would always watch the Chaminade Players' performance, but I never saw myself with the skill set needed to help. In 2019, I decided that I would try and develop such skills, and I have been happy with the result. Working in a tight-knit community, it was amazing to see how much work goes into putting on a production and feel rewarded with the result.

Reach for

the Top

As an active member of Reach for the Top, I am constantly learning new things, from all different fields of study. I am not very good at this activity; however, I choose to attend every practice because it gives me the chance for self-improvement.

Mathletes

Mathletes is a club that allows me to cover math concepts that are outside of the curriculum. Questions practiced often requires the application of various pieces of knowledge to answer, improving my problem-solving abilities. Through this, I have been able to prepare for math contests.

Chess

As a novice member, I attend chess club to try and improve my skills. The game of chess requires planning out moves and predicting what your opponent will do, both requiring heavy thought. I hope to improve my cognitive ability by playing.

NSS Space Settlement Contest

On a team of 12, my group and I are developing an idea for a space settlement to submit to the NSS Space Settlement Contest. This requires knowledge in all fields as there are plenty of factors to consider. My particular focus will be on how the structure will be built, considering the materials, shape, and size.

We have achieved great success, winning the Excellence in Engineering Award at the Ontario District Georgian College Event and advancing to the Ontario Provincial Championship.

As the marketing lead of Team 2634: The Gryphons, I have produced various pieces of content, some of which are featured above. Going into my third year with the team, I am responsible for overseeing the online presence of the team, managing a group of team members with various tasks, and content production. I have created works varying from event recaps to descriptive profiles, highlighting the team’s strength and success.

Chaminade Film Society

Chaminade Film Society has let me explore my interest in cinematography and has made a large impact on my involvement in creative works. Coming into high school, I never would have imagined that I would be directing films or designing posters. I have learnt a multitude of techniques and concepts through my experience with this club.

It is currently my 4th year with the club, and I play a mentoring role, helping other film groups. I take notes of the discussions we have and participate in the production of club-wide films.

Luminato Festival

In the summer of 2017, I was selected to join the Luminato Youth Volunteer Photography Program. Working with mentors and other mentees, we were tasked with covering various events hosted by Luminato.

In May of 2017, Luminato hosted two workshops which allowed me to connect with mentors and other mentees, in addition to teaching about different compositional tools. Some techniques included leading lines, the rule of thirds, and framing. To apply these concepts, I was given the opportunity to photograph many different events held in downtown Toronto.
